Costa Rica Blog Info
This blog is about life as an expatriate in Costa Rica. Yes, I know that expatriate blogs are annoyingly common. But this one will be different in a small but I believe refreshing way: instead of putting all non-English words in italics, I will just keep them in regular text. The italics really annoy the hell out of me for two reasons. One, because it is yuppy-as-hell to engage in self-delight at how many foreign words one knows. And two, because italicizing non-English words only shows just how disconnected the writer is from the particular culture he or she is writing about. Italicizing non-English words just screams tourist/ignorant traveler who stands out and really has no desire to fit in, but only to stop and look at all the “exotic” things as if traveling to another country is the same as going to the zoo.
